Pull out what you're keeping, set the hazardous stuff aside, and leave the rest. The crew walks it with you, confirms the price, carries everything out, sorts it for donation and recycling as they load, sweeps the floor, and hauls it away. Most garages are done in two to four hours.
Before the crew arrives
A garage cleanout needs less prep than people think. Three things make it go faster:
- Separate what stays. Move keepers to one corner, into the house, or just tape a note on them. You don't have to sort the rest.
- Pull the hazardous items. Paint, stains, solvents, pesticides, fertilizer, propane tanks, gasoline, motor oil, antifreeze, and car batteries can't go on a junk truck. Put them together so they don't get mixed into the load. Your town's household hazardous waste collection takes them.
- Clear the approach. Move cars so the truck can back up close to the garage door. In winter, clear snow and ice from the path. A short carry is a faster job.
Don't bag loose stuff unless you want to; the crew brings bags and bins. Don't drag anything to the driveway. That's what you're paying for.
The walkthrough
The first ten minutes are the most important. The crew looks at the whole garage, asks about anything that's unclear, and confirms the price you were quoted from photos, or gives you the on-site price if this is the first look. You point out what stays. You ask about anything you're unsure of. Nothing moves until you say go.
This is also when the crew tells you if something can't go: a tank with gas in it, a pile of old tile that's priced by weight, a refrigerator that needs the door removed first. No surprises later.
How the crew works
A two-person crew clears a garage in layers. Big items first: furniture, appliances, exercise equipment, the broken snowblower. Those go straight onto the truck and open up the floor. Then the mid-size things: bins, boxes, bikes, tools, shelving. Then the loose layer on the floor, which gets bagged. The crew sorts as they go, pulling out furniture and tools in good shape for donation and setting metal aside for recycling.
Expect some noise and some dust. Expect the crew to ask a few times "this too?" when something looks like it might be a keeper. That's a good sign.
How long it takes
- Single-car garage: one to three hours
- Two-car garage, packed: three to five hours
- Garage plus a shed or basement: often a full day, or two loads
What adds time: heavy material like concrete or tile, a long carry from a detached garage, and a thick layer of small loose items that all have to be bagged. What saves time: keepers already separated, and the truck parked close.
Do you need to be there?
For the walkthrough, yes, or someone who can speak for you: a spouse, a relative, a neighbor with a key. After that, many homeowners leave and come back to an empty garage. If the price is agreed in advance and the garage is unlocked or on a keypad, some crews, including ours, will do the entire job while you're at work and text photos when it's done.
What the garage looks like after
Empty, and swept. A good crew sweeps the floor before leaving and takes the sweepings with them. Shelving stays if you want it, goes if you don't. If there were oil stains or a damp corner under the pile, you'll see them now, which is useful if you're planning to paint the floor or park there again.
If you've asked for the shed or the old deck to come down on the same visit, that happens after the garage is loaded. See what kinds of demolition junk removal crews do.
Where it all goes
Usable furniture, tools, and sports gear go to donation when a charity will take them. Metal, including appliances, bikes, and shelving, goes to a scrap recycler. Electronics go to e-waste. The rest goes to a licensed transfer station. More in where your stuff goes.
Your checklist
- Keepers separated or marked
- Paint, chemicals, fuel, propane, and batteries pulled aside
- Cars moved; path to the garage clear
- Someone available for the first ten minutes, or the price agreed by text
- A decision on the shelving
