Getting rid of bulky junk in Windham, NH

How the Windham transfer station on Ledge Road works for furniture, mattresses, appliances, TVs and renovation debris, what it won't take, and when a crew makes more sense.

Short answer

Windham residents can bring furniture, mattresses, appliances and their own renovation debris to the transfer station on Ledge Road with a free decal. Hazardous waste goes to regional collection days instead, and contractors can't use the station at all. If you'd rather not load the car, a crew can take it in one visit. With Rocky's, single items start at $35.

Who can use the Windham transfer station

The Windham Transfer Station at 2 Ledge Road is for Windham residents bringing their own household waste. The vehicle decal is free and is issued at the station by an attendant once you show proof of residency. The town's solid waste ordinance prohibits contractors, so if you've hired someone for a project, their debris can't go in under your decal.

Furniture, mattresses and appliances

Windham's 2025 waste disposal guide lists couches, furniture, mattresses, box springs and toilets as accepted. Appliances and refrigerators are accepted too. Refrigerated appliances go to the south end of the station with the scrap metal. The guide doesn't spell out fees for these items, so call the station before a big load.

TVs and electronics: call first

This one is confusing. The town's guide marks TVs and monitors as not accepted in one spot and lists electronics as accepted, with conditions, in another. The town's special instructions page says TVs and monitors are no longer general trash. New Hampshire law also bans electronic devices from landfills (RSA 149-M:27). Call the station at 603-426-5102 before you bring a TV.

Renovation debris

Windham is friendlier than most towns here. According to the town FAQ, residents can bring construction and demolition debris from their own projects in their own vehicle. The guide lists lumber, concrete, bricks, pavers and insulation, and sheetrock and porcelain count as demolition waste. Commercial C&D isn't accepted.

What doesn't go to Ledge Road

  • Hazardous waste. Not taken at the station. Windham points residents to the household hazardous waste collections coordinated by the Nashua Regional Planning Commission, held on set dates through the warmer months.
  • Brush, leaves and grass. These go to a separate yard waste site on a seasonal schedule, not the transfer station.
  • Anything from a contractor or business. Not allowed.

When a crew makes more sense

  • A lake house or basement full of furniture that won't fit in one car trip
  • A contractor's debris pile, which can't go in under your decal
  • Heavy items like a fridge, a treadmill or a sleeper sofa you'd rather not lift
  • A storage unit you want emptied without being there
