Look for plenty of recent reviews that talk about showing up on time, a fast reply when you call or text, an exact price before any work starts, proof of insurance, and a company that sends its own crew. Text the same photos to two or three companies and see who answers first with a clear number.
1. Read the reviews, not just the stars
Almost every junk removal company around Salem, Nashua and Manchester shows four or five stars somewhere. The stars matter less than what's in the reviews. Look for:
- Recent reviews. A steady stream from the last few months tells you the company is busy and still doing good work.
- The words people use. "On time", "texted before they came", "the price was what they quoted", "careful with the walls". Those are the things that go wrong with a bad hauler.
- How the owner replies. A company that answers its reviews, good and bad, usually answers its phone too.
- Jobs like yours. If you're clearing a parent's house, look for estate cleanout reviews. If it's one fridge, look for small-job reviews.
2. Test how fast they answer
The way a company treats you before the job is how it will treat you on the day. Text a few photos of what's going and note how long it takes to get a reply and a price. A local crew that's paying attention usually replies the same day, often within minutes. If it takes two days to hear back, expect the same when you need to reschedule.
3. Get a firm price, not a guess
Junk removal is priced by how much of the truck your items fill, with labor, loading, hauling and disposal included. Very heavy material like concrete, shingles and dirt is often priced by weight. What you want is a firm number before anything gets loaded, from photos or an on-site look.
Be careful with a number given over the phone with no photos. That's a guess, and guesses tend to go up on the day. Ask the company straight out: "Is this the price, or an estimate?" See how Rocky's pricing works for one example.
4. Make sure they're licensed and insured
A crew carrying a sleeper sofa down your stairs can scrape a wall or crack a tile. Insurance is what covers it. Any real company will say yes without hesitating, and should send a certificate of insurance if your condo association, landlord or property manager asks for one.
5. Ask who actually shows up
Some booking sites and apps pass your job to whichever hauler happens to be free that day. That can work out fine, but you won't know the crew, and the reviews you read may not be about them. Ask who is coming, and whether it's the company's own crew and truck.
6. Check when they work
Junk doesn't always wait for a weekday. If you're cleaning out on a weekend or after work, ask about evening and Sunday hours before you book, not after. Also ask how arrival works: a time window and a heads-up text before the truck pulls up means you're not stuck at home all day.
7. Ask where your stuff goes
A good crew sorts as it loads: furniture that can be donated, metal and appliances for scrap recycling, and electronics kept out of the trash (New Hampshire bans them from landfills). Only what's left goes to a licensed facility. If a company can't tell you where things end up, that's worth noticing. More on how donation and recycling work.
8. Know what they won't take
No legitimate junk hauler takes hazardous waste: loose paint, chemicals, propane tanks, asbestos. Your town's household hazardous waste day handles those. Everything else that two people can carry is usually fair game. Here's the full list of what we take.
A quick checklist
- Recent reviews that mention on time and fair prices
- A quick reply to your text or call, the same day
- A firm price before any work starts, with labor and disposal included
- Licensed and insured, certificate on request
- Their own crew and truck
- Hours that fit your schedule, plus a heads-up text before arrival
- A straight answer about donation and recycling
