Hudson's transfer station off West Road runs on passes: a few free ones a year per household, one pass per load, and a separate paid pass for every mattress. Freon appliances and TVs aren't accepted there at all. They go through the town's paid monthly curbside pickup instead. A crew can take everything, any day. With Rocky's, single items start at $35.
How Hudson's pass system works
The Hudson Transfer Station is on Old Landfill Road off West Road, for Hudson residents and residential waste only. Instead of a sticker, Hudson uses passes. Each residence gets three free passes a calendar year, picked up at Public Works on Constitution Drive (not at the landfill) with ID and proof of residency, and a few more can be bought. One pass covers one load, and a bigger truck or trailer can count as two. Yard waste, cardboard and metal don't need a pass.
Commercial vehicles aren't allowed unless the Public Works Director approves them in advance.
Mattresses need their own pass
Mattresses and box springs need a separate special pass for each piece, bought ahead of time at Public Works. That includes a sleeper sofa with the mattress still inside. Other bulky items like furniture and rugs are handled on the town's clean-up days.
Fridges and TVs don't go to the station
Hudson doesn't accept freon appliances like refrigerators, or TVs and electronics, at the transfer station. The town's trash contractor offers paid curbside pickup for bulky items, appliances, freon appliances and TVs once a month; you call to schedule. New Hampshire also bans electronic devices from landfills (RSA 149-M:27).
Hazardous waste
Not at the transfer station, and neither are propane tanks, batteries, tires or used oil. Hudson residents use the household hazardous waste collections run by the Nashua Regional Planning Commission.
When a crew makes more sense
- A fridge or TV that can't wait for the monthly curbside day
- More than one mattress, where the special passes add up
- A shed, garage or basement cleanout that would use a year's passes
- Anything from a business or rental property
