Getting rid of bulky junk in Pelham, NH

How the Pelham transfer station handles couches, mattresses, freon appliances and TVs, the 4-foot rule, what goes elsewhere, and when to call a crew instead.

Short answer

Pelham residents can bring couches, mattresses, freon appliances and TVs to the transfer station on Newcomb Field Parkway with a free sticker, but each one is a per-item fee, and nothing over 4 feet long or wide goes in the building. Construction debris and hazardous waste go elsewhere. A crew can take all of it in one trip. With Rocky's, single items start at $35.

Who can use the Pelham transfer station

The Pelham Recycling Center and Transfer Station at 74 Newcomb Field Parkway is for Pelham residents, and seasonal camp owners can get a sticker too. The sticker is free: bring your license and vehicle registration. Commercial haulers are prohibited, and only waste generated in Pelham is accepted. Non-resident property owners can get a temporary clean-up permit with a tax bill.

Bulky items are pay-per-item

Pelham charges by the piece for bulky items: couches, tables, chair sets, entertainment centers, recliners, nightstands, mattresses of any size, box springs, toilets and full-room carpet each have a fee. The town's list says its items and pricing are as of June 1, 2026, and payment is cash or check.

The rule people miss: items over 4 feet in length or width aren't accepted on the conveyor or in the building. Most sofas, sectionals and big entertainment centers are longer than that.

Appliances and TVs

  • Freon appliances like refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and water coolers are accepted for a per-item fee. If the freon was already removed, the town wants paperwork showing a certified, licensed contractor did it.
  • Scrap metal is free.
  • TVs and monitors are fee items too. New Hampshire bans electronic devices from landfills (RSA 149-M:27), so they don't belong in the trash.

What Pelham sends somewhere else

  • Construction and demolition debris. Not accepted. Pelham points residents to a private transfer station in Salem.
  • Asbestos. Not accepted.
  • Hazardous waste. Not accepted. Pelham residents use the household hazardous waste collections in Nashua run through the Nashua Regional Planning Commission. Latex paint can go only if it's dried out.

When a crew makes more sense

  • A sofa or sectional longer than 4 feet
  • Several fee items at once, where the per-piece fees and the trips add up
  • Deck, shed or renovation debris, which the town won't take
  • A property cleanout on a closing deadline
